18,000 gallon bulk propane storage tank

Celebrating 65 Years

Shaffer’s Bottled Gas began its journey in 1901 as Daniel Shaffer’s, a hardware store serving the coal mining communities with tools, furniture, and appliances. In 1939, the company entered the propane industry by offering gas cooking stoves, later expanding to include propane water heaters and Warm Morning heating stoves. This was possible because of the work of chemist Walter Snelling in 1910. He made the groundbreaking discovery while studying gasoline vapors—not the discovery of propane itself, but the realization that propane could be separated, bottled, and used as a portable source of energy. This development of the modern propane tank and helped launch the entire liquified petroleum gas industry – and Shaffer’s Bottled Gas!

In 1960, the business incorporated as Shaffer’s Bottled Gas and constructed a bulk plant, launching its 100-pound cylinder exchange service and beginning propane deliveries with bobtail trucks. This marked the start of a dedicated focus on propane services, which continued to grow steadily.

Following the 1974 oil embargo, the company exited the heating stove market and concentrated on propane-powered appliances such as cooking stoves, clothes dryers, and water heaters. In 1995, the family split the original business, with Jeff Shaffer and his father, Jack, taking over the propane operations under the Shaffer’s Bottled Gas name.

In 2015, recognizing the evolving needs of its customers, Shaffer’s Bottled Gas expanded its offerings to include HVAC services. This strategic move allowed the company to provide comprehensive home comfort solutions, combining its propane expertise with heating, ventilation, and air conditioning installation and maintenance.

Today, Shaffer’s Bottled Gas stands as a trusted, family-run business with over a century of service, known for its commitment to quality, innovation, and customer care.
